After I download, when I try to open the file I get an error message”access denied” error message?  Retried the download with the same result.  Used to simply click the link and the mag opened in a new window.   iPad Pro, iOS 18.6.2.

Whoops! Looks like we made a typo in the download issue file name.

We fixed it ... you will need to clear your browser cache or do a force-refresh by doing CTRL+F5. Then try the download again ... make sure when you hover over the link that the browser status bar at the bottom says 190.MRH25-12-W.pdf or 190.MRH25-12-A.pdf ... the typo was we named it 189. instead of 190.

When the file doesn't exist, it downloads some .XML which if you click that it will say "access denied" since it's just xml text that points to a non-existent file.

TRY IT NOW. It should work fine.

The file opened just fine, but the page headers are jibberish, and on the wide version the text in the lower right-hand corner of the cover is two word overwriting one another.

Okay, more information, please: What device type and PDF reader are you using? A Windows PC with the Sumatra PDF reader and an iPad with iBook may be quite different. Have you tried more than one PDF viewer?

Also, have you had this problem with past month's magazines? Like how does the November issue look?

As I said in my initial response, I’m using an iPad Pro, running iOS 18.6.2.  I open the document in Books.  Previous magazines have been formatted properly.  IMG_3562.png

What happens if you open the same PDF in UPDF (free version) on your iPad Pro? There could be a compatibility bug between Books and our latest publishing software version. We just upgraded as of this issue to the most recent release of Affinity Publisher 2 (2.6.5).

I’m also on an iPad, iPadOS 18.7.1.  When I download the wide PDF which displays it in the browser, and after opening it in iBooks, I see the same problem.  Everything looks normal except for the white on black headings like the one below from the top left corner of page six.  When I select that gibberish, copy it, and paste it into notepad or, what the heck lets try it, this post… “PUBLISHER’S MUSINGS | 2” - yup comes out reading exactly what it should.

I also have Adobe Acrobat installed (although that’s not usually what I use), and interestingly enough it displays properly in acrobat.  Same iPad.

I’ve ever had a problem reading MRH in Safari or iBooks before.  That the file displays correctly in Acrobat and incorrectly in Safari/iBooks could mean that the file is technically correct but doing something a little tricky, or that it’s missing a font that should be embedded and which Acrobat has, but which Safari/iBooks do not, or that the file is a bit wrong but Acrobat, being a forgiving sort of PDF display engine, is covering for it’s misdeeds and displaying it properly anyway.

I’m not going to install UPDF to see what it looks like in that, I already have more than enough perfectly good PDF readers.

Okay, we updated to version 1.1 of the Dec MRH using a different method of generating the PDF. Download again and let us know if v1.1 of the magazine makes any difference with iBooks on an iPad.
